Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct non-slewing crane operations, including lifting loads, and positioning, travelling, and performing multiple crane lifts using non-slewing cranes.This unit applies to those working in site-based roles.The work required in this unit relates to the National Standard for High Risk Work but this unit does not provide the licence. Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements that may apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors, and must be sourced from state jurisdictions prior to applying this unit.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare for non-slewing crane operations
  • Access, interpret and apply crane operation documentation to ensure work activity is compliant
  • Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements and safety information
  • Identify hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures in line with workplace policies
  • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures for non-slewing crane, and be prepared for fires, accidents and emergencies according to standard operating procedures and safe work practices
  • Coordinate and communicate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencement per work requirements
       
Element: Operate non-slewing crane in line with established requirements to complete work activity
  • Carry out equipment pre-start and start-up checks in line with workplace procedures
  • Identify faults or defects and rectify or report within scope of own responsibility and according to workplace procedures
  • Inspect and confirm lifting gear is attached according to work requirements, equipment specifications, and workplace procedures
  • Confirm the work area is clear and safe prior to commencing work activity
  • Position, stabilise and level crane prior to commencement of lift operations
  • Prepare loads for lift in accordance with crane limitations and rigging requirements, and according to workplace procedures
  • Use crane controls and functions to lift and position loads using techniques suited to equipment capabilities, site and work conditions, and according to workplace procedures
  • Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms
  • Monitor hazards and risks during operations, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
  • Park up, shut down, secure and carry out post operational inspection of equipment in line with workplace procedures
       
Element: Travel crane
  • Plan a firm and level route for the crane travel according to workplace procedures
  • Monitor and manage hazards along the route
  • Travel the crane in accordance with Australian Standards, manufacturer’s guidelines, engineering specifications and organisational policies and procedures and work requirements
       
Element: Perform multiple crane lifts
  • Obtain approval to perform a multiple crane lift from the appropriate statutory authority prior to planning activity
  • Plan multiple crane lift and obtain internal approvals for lifting plan according to workplace procedures
  • Perform the multiple crane lift as per authorised plan under the supervision of an authorised person, according to workplace procedures
       
Element: Conduct housekeeping activities
  • Clear work area and dispose or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
  • Manage and/or report hazards to maintain a safe working environment
  • Complete and file documentation, and distribute according to workplace requirements

Assessment Tasks
